DataLab is hiring a Geospatial Student for Library’s new Internship Program

The UC Davis Library has launched an undergraduate student internship program and is recruiting four students for the 2025-2026 academic year. These paid internships offer students hands-on opportunities to contribute to meaningful, project-based work that advances the library’s mission to foster learning, research, and discovery.

The internship cohort will develop valuable academic and professional skills through mentorship, collaboration, and project experience. The Library provides a supportive, structured experience emphasizing digital literacy, the ability to use information and communication technologies to find, evaluate, create, and communicate information effectively. This opportunity is ideal for students who are curious, motivated, and eager to contribute to library projects while building knowledge and experience in a professional setting.

The geospatial internship position supports DataLab’s mission by creating, cleaning, exploring and analyzing data. The intern will work in our collaborative team environment on a variety of research-related projects as well as independently on tasks such as exploring and implementing methods, developing workflows, and generating documentation for both spatial and non-spatial datasets. One primary focus of this position is supporting and extending the work of the UC Davis Library’s award winning American Viticultural Areas (AVA) digitization project. Specific responsibilities include:

  • Creating, cleaning, and maintaining boundary data for the AVA project in QGIS
  • Writing R scripts to clean, maintain, and analyze data for a variety of projects
  • Documenting data and workflows

Job requirements

  • Must be enrolled as an undergraduate student at UC Davis
  • Academic major or career interest and relevant coursework aligned with the internship focus
  • Ability to communicate orally and in writing
  • Ability to work with attention to detail
  • Ability to work both independently and with a diverse team
  • Experience or coursework in computer programming equivalent to an introductory course.
  • Proficiency with GIS concepts and software. Experience or coursework equivalent to at least one upper-division GIS course is preferred
  • Experience with or willingness to learn QGIS, R, and other open-source software tools
  • Preferred qualifications: experience using git and GitHub for version control.
