Description
In this workshop, participants will learn basic mapmaking and cartography using Google Earth Pro. The purpose of this workshop is to create simple “Study Area” maps that can be used in papers, proposals, etc without the large learning curve associated with more advanced geospatial analysis. The workshop will cover simple spatial data creation, inset maps, and the principles of cartography including legends, scale bars, and labels.
Learning Objectives
Participants will learn how to create spatial data as well as how to produce maps with legends, scale bars, and labels.

Speaker: Lauren Mabe
Lauren is a PhD Candidate in the Geography Graduate Group and previously worked as a cartographer for Garmin Intl. Her research focuses on sustainable organic waste management regimes in California. She uses many geospatial tools in her work and is passionate about good maps in research!
Location: Seminar Room (room 1025) in the UC Davis PSEL (Physical Sciences & Engineering Library). Zoom details will be emailed upon registration for people wishing to attend online.
Prerequisites: Beginners are encouraged to attend this workshop. No prior experience is needed, but participants should be comfortable with basic file management skills.
Software: Participants should have Google Earth Pro for Desktop, available for download: https://www.google.com/earth/about/versions/ Google Earth Pro is free, has robust cartography tools, and has a lower learning curve than other GIS software.
