Carpentry Instructor Training Workshop

November 17, 2019 @ 10:00 am - 6:00 pm

We are hosting a Carpentries Instructor Training on November 16-17 (Sat-Sun) 10AM – 6PM at the DataLab in Shields Library! This workshop is open to anyone interested in improving their teaching skills, and is specifically designed to train people who have entry-level software and data skills to share their knowledge with colleagues by co-teaching and helping at Carpentries workshops. Participants must attend both days of the training workshop.

About The Carpentries
Software, Data, and Library Carpentry workshops teach computing skills to researchers in order to make their work faster, more efficient, and more reproducible. Several common skills taught at the workshops include R, python, task automation with UNIX shell, and Git. These are taught for general applications (in Software Carpentry) as well as in context-specific lessons targeting common discipline-specific workflows (in Data Carpentry and Library Carpentry). If you have skills that you would like to share, or even if you are just interested in learning more about instructional best practices more broadly, then you might be interested in this Instructor Training workshop.

This opportunity
UC Davis currently has such a membership with The Carpentries through the Lab for Data Intensive Biology, which includes a large number of training slots for Instructors. This is an excellent opportunity for UCD graduate students, post docs, staff, and faculty to get access to this training, which is free to you! Once trained, we invite you to support Carpentries workshops and related activities on the UCD campus. If you decide to become a certified Carpentries Instructor, you may also have opportunities to teach elsewhere with travel expenses paid.

Non-UCD affiliates are also welcome to apply. UCD training will be prioritized, and we are happy to support our neighboring Carpentries communities with any available seats.

Content of the training
This workshop does not teach technical skills — this is entirely about how we teach (and why). It is a fun way to brush up on your teaching skills and knowledge in a friendly and open environment. Attendees overwhelmingly rate this training as worthwhile, welcoming, and applicable to their teaching.

Training logistics
The training event will be two consecutive days, 10AM-6PM. You will need to be present for the entire two days. You will need to bring a laptop, something to write on, and a device capable of video recording. Your instructors will be Karen Word (postdoc in the Lab for Data Intensive Biology at UC Davis and Deputy Director of Instructor Training for the Carpentries) and Amy Hodge (Science Data Librarian at Stanford University). We recognize that weekend events can be hard on families — if you would like to attend but have family obligations that may interfere, please include this information in your application and we’ll see what we can do about accommodations or alternatives for training.

Interested? Apply now!
Please fill out this short form, and we’ll be in touch soon!
