Adventures in Data Science

Making data science accessible while building skills for the future

UC Davis DataLab developed Adventures in Data Science (STS 115/195) to expose students from all majors to data science tools and computational thinking while growing an inclusive community of data science learners.

Undergraduates complete a two-quarter learning adventure—from having very little or no computational background to being fully integrated into technical teams working with DataLab’s staff data scientists, postdocs, and graduate students on cutting-edge research projects proposed by UC Davis faculty across disciplines.

Adventures in Data Science aims to:

  1. expose learners to principles for working with data;
  2. give them real opportunities to apply computational tools and thinking to tackle novel research questions;
  3. create low-stakes opportunities for learners to take risks, make mistakes, and network while gaining technical, professional development, communications, and management skills; and
  4. grow their confidence to help launch them into today’s data-intensive workforce.

Currently offered as STS 115/195, the series launched in the University Honors Program as IST 8x in 2021 with a generous alumni gift.
