Introduction to Remote Computing (11-part series) – Workshop 6: Structuring your projects for current and future you (8/17)

August 17, 2021 @ 9:00 am - 11:30 am

In this workshop, we will discuss folder structures for organizing your projects so that you can track inputs, outputs, and processing scripts over time, and keep yourself organized as your projects evolve.

This is an 11-part workshop series with sessions 9:00am – 11:30am on 8/3, 8/4, 8/10, 8/12, 8/13, 8/17, 8/19, 8/24, 8/25, 8/26, and 8/31. Participation in all sessions is encouraged, but not required.

This 11-part workshop series in August 2021 will introduce attendees to the principles and practice of remote computing with UNIX on workstations, HPCs, and cloud. Topics include shell, editing remote files, ssh, remote file transfer, software installation with conda, project organization, automating analyses, cluster compute with slurm, and cloud compute with AWS.

Learning Objectives

After this workshop, learners will have gained hands-on experience in many facets of remote computer usage.

No prior programming experience is required, but this series will be most useful to researchers who are proficient at a scripting language (R, Python, Matlab, SAS, etc.) and are interested in using the campus HPC facilities or otherwise running processes on remote machines. All learners will need access to an internet-connected computer and the latest version of Zoom.

Learners are expected to actively participate in the sessions and complete all pre- and post- assessment surveys. Learner registration and survey data will be used by the instructional team to evaluate and improve our training activities. Responses will be deidentified and aggregated for reporting purposes. This series is offered by the Lab for Data Intensive Biology through the NIH Common Fund Data Ecosystem (https://training.nih-cfde.org/en/latest/) in collaboration with the UC Davis DataLab (https://datalab.ucdavis.edu) as a pilot for a new remote computing microcredential offered in collaboration with UC Davis’ GradPathways Institute.

Location: Zoom. Participants will receive a Zoom link prior to each session.

Registration: https://registration.genomecenter.ucdavis.edu/events/IntroRemoteComputing/

Cost: A non-refundable registration fee of $5 reserves your space at all 11 workshops in this series.
