October 5, 2023 @ 10:00 am - 12:00 pm
Learn about data science and research computing at UC Davis, meet researchers and students with similar interests, and get help installing open source software for research at our annual in person InstallFest!
No registration necessary.
Description
DataLab’s Fall 2023 kick-off event is an in person community InstallFest! Come with your laptop to this drop-in session to get help installing various open source software commonly used for research in (and applying) data science. DataLab’s data scientists will be joined by experts from across campus to help you overcome installation problems and answer your questions about data science and research computing at UC Davis.
Installfest is great opportunity to:
- – meet data scientists and research computing experts from across the University
- – meet other students and researchers with similar interests
- – create working environments on your laptop to perform common data science tasks
- – be sure that you have the software and computing environments you’ll need to participate in upcoming DataLab workshops, research and learning cluster events, etc.
- – find out about new software
- – troubleshoot installs on your machine
- – ask questions about how to get started with different software
- – find out where to go to learn more
Examples of software we commonly help with include:
- – Programming (R, Python, JavaScript, Julia)
- – Tools for collaboration and workflows (Jupyter notebooks; text editors; plugins and customization; SSH and remote logins)
- – Version control and reproducibility (Git; GitHub; Docker)
- – Databases (MySQL Workbench; SQLite; DB Browser; NoSQL; Postgres; Solr)
- – Virtual machines and installing additional operating systems
- – Spatial tools and GIS (QGIS; PostGIS; Spatiallite; spatial R packages and Python libraries)
- – Machine learning and neural networks (TensorFlow; Pytorch)
- – Data visualizations (ggplot; virtual reality user interface)
- – GPU toolkits (CUDA, OpenCL)
- – Development Tools (compilers; linkers; profilers; configure; make; cmake; snakemake)
- – Natural language processing (Python libraries and R packages)
- – Social networks (Gephi; Python libraries and R packages)
- – … and more!
All members of the UC Davis community are welcome to attend.
Note: This event is not intended as technical support for general computer issues or general support for a specific class. For those questions, contact your departmental IT or course instructor. While we cannot provide guided overviews or individual tutoring on using specific tools during this session, we can help you identify relevant courses, workshops and other resources where you can learn more.
Can’t make it to this event? Check out our upcoming workshop schedule. Recordings of prior workshops are also available in DataLab’s training archive.
