Getting to Know SQL Workshop (2-part; Nov 13 & 15)

November 13, 2019 @ 3:00 pm - 5:00 pm

Learn the basics of SQL in this two-part, hands-on workshop geared for undergraduates and those who prefer a paced, practice-based approach to learning! SQL is a command-driven language used to communicate with relational database management systems. SQL statements are used to perform tasks such as updating or retrieving data from a database, performing calculations, and exporting extracted data to other software for analysis. This 2-part workshop series on Nov. 13 and Nov. 15 is designed for undergraduate students.

After this workshop learners should be able to:
– perform common SQL commands including: sorting, filtering, calculating values, aggregating, combining data, basic data cleaning (i.e. replace missing values)
– combine commands to construct a query to get to know a database, answer specific questions, and extract subsets of data.

Prior to the workshop, download the DB browser (https://sqlitebrowser.org) and ensure that it is installed and running. Bring your laptop to the workshops and please ensure that you have access to campus wireless “Eduroam.” No prior programming experience is necessary. Only register if you can attend both days! No prior programming experience is necessary.

Registration is required. Click here to register!
Participants are expected to attend both days of the workshop. Workshop dates are Thursday and Friday, November 13 and 15, from 3-5pm each day.
You will receive a confirmation email once you are accepted into the workshop.
Undergraduates receive priority registration. Graduate students, postdocs, faculty, staff, etc. are welcome to attend, space permitting.

After this course learners have the option to become Bloomberg certified. After completing both sessions of the workshop, request to join the Bloomberg Training Team by emailing ucdavis.bloomberg@gmail.com with the subject “Bloomberg” from your UC Davis email address. Within a few days you will receive training material to complete for your certification. This certification may be particularly relevant to students interested in careers in business and/or finance. You do not need to complete the Bloomberg certification to enroll in this workshop. For more information about the Bloomberg Terminal and why you might want to become Bloomberg certified, see the Bloomberg website and/or contact Mr. Lundblad in Agricultural and Resource Economics.

Special thanks to Mr. Lundblad for supporting this workshop!
